Readings and conversation based on the acclaimed anthology Between Certain Death and a Possible Future: Queer Writing on Growing Up with the AIDS Crisis, edited by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore. The book centers the experience of queer writers who came of age in the midst of the AIDS epidemic with the belief that desire intrinsically led to death, and who internalized this trauma as part of becoming queer. Join Soft Services artist Chloë Bass and author Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore for a conversation about the body and colonialism, intimacy and loss, cruising and alienation, communal possibility, and intimate transgression. Bass and Sycamore share a mutual interest in the pervasive potential of strange, everyday intimacies, and a mutual enraged concern about society's failure to allow for such intimacies (or, worse, its commitment to police) as an important element of receiving proper interpersonal care. The conversation will focus on the embodied experiences produced through interaction with Soft Services' stone sculptures in Volunteer Park, and examine how acts of noticing open the door for new engagements with social and environmental landscapes. The dialogue will be punctuated by readings from Sycamore's genre-bending book The Freezer Door, portions of which are set in Volunteer Park.

From the Sangli district in the rural south of India to the life of a New York City callboy (that’s me!), sex workers reach out through film and video to share their myriad of experiences. As misrepresentations of those who trade erotic labor proliferate in the mainstream media, sex workers and sex worker activists help to reduce stigmatization by becoming their own authors, reporters, and organizers. The evening’s films will examine the unique challenges and joys of being a sex worker. Following the screening will be a panel discussion with past and present sex workers whose experience varies from peep show work, fetish & fantasy to erotic massage and more. Miss Indigo Blue (Academy of Burlesque), Annie Oakley (Sex Workers' Art Show), Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore (Author of So Many Ways to Sleep Badly) and other special guests will be in attendance. Please join us to discuss individual experiences with advocacy, work and empowerment. After nearly two decades of political, literary and artistic interventions in San Francisco, writer and activist Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore (author of So Many Ways to Sleep Badly, editor of That’s Revolting! Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation) will be leaving the Bay Area this fall. Join us for a special preview of Mattilda’s memoir-in progress, The End of San Francisco, described by Sycamore as a book “about the people and spaces and feelings in moments of losses that have made and unmade me — my political, cultural, social, ethical, sexual and emotional formations, and their undoing.” The centerpiece of the book is about moving to San Francisco in the early-’90s, and coming of age as a queer rabble-rouser on both coasts. Much of that section, and the next, which starts as the dot-com crash gives way to new perils and possibilities, takes place in the Mission just blocks from Modern Times — what a perfect place for a special preview reading!
